The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey (Habit 2 - Begin with the End in Mind Summary

Summary

1. We are response-able to use our imagination and creativity to write new scripts that are more effective, more congruent with our deepest values and with the correct principles that give our values meaning.

2. I am and I can change. I can live out of my imagination instead of my memory. I can tie myself to my limitless potential instead of my limiting past. I can become my own first creator.

3. When my sense of personal worth comes from my net worth, I am vulnerable to anything that will affect that net worth. If my sense of security lies in my reputation or in the things I have, my life will be in a constant state of threat and jeopardy that these possessions may be lost or stolen or devalued.

4. By centering our lives on correct principles, we create a solid foundation for development of the four life-support factors (refer pg 124).

5. We detect rather than invent our missions in life.

6. Fundamental importance of proactivity and of working within our Circle of Influence. When we are proactive focus, it will naturally expand our Circle of Influence. However, when we are reactive focus, it will shrink our Circle of Influence.

7. Personal responsibility, or proactivity, is fundamental to the first creation. Ie: I am the programmer (Habit 1).

8. Until you accept the idea that you are responsible, that you are the programmer, you won't really invest in writing the programme. Ie: Write the programme (Habit 2)

9. Personal mission statements allow us to feel a sense of clarity, a sense of organisation and commitment, a sense of exhilaration and freedom. It aligns our behavior with our beliefs.

10. I can write the program, write the script, in harmony with my values, with my personal mission statement.
